VT Public Banking Congress
SAVE THE DATE! This August, the White River NRCD will host President of the Bank of North Dakota, Don Morgan, to share about the successes of state banking in ND.
Public banking traces its roots to the Populist movement of the late 1800s, when millions of farmers organized across the country to address debt, high interest rates, railroad monopolies, and the lack of affordable credit in rural communities. Their efforts helped shape many of the agricultural lending institutions and cooperative financial systems that followed, including the creation of the Bank of North Dakota in 1919.
On August 4th, we will host a farmer-centric event and dinner, where we will hear examples of public bank-backed farm programs in North Dakota. Location TBD.
On August 5th, participate in the Vermont Public Banking Congress at Vermont Law and Graduate Scool, where we will bring together farmers, legislators, Conservation Districts, local organizations, researchers, bankers, and community members to explore how public banking models could support Vermont’s rural communities, agricultural economy, climate resilience efforts, and long-term stewardship goals.
